Four skills behind every subject
Reading, writing, maths and homework all rest on four core skills. When one of them is shaky, school feels hard. I identify which skill needs support and build it through play, at your child's pace, in live 1-on-1 online sessions.
Receptive language
UnderstandingUnderstanding
I help your child build understanding: how they take in what they hear and read. It supports following instructions, reading comprehension and learning in class.
Signs your child may need support
- forgets instructions with more than one step
- reads aloud well but can't say what happened
- watches other children before starting a task
What I work on
- following multi-step instructions
- listening comprehension
- reading comprehension
- vocabulary in context
In my sessions
I use listening games with picture cards, “spot the mistake” stories, and drawing what your child hears
What I aim for
I aim for your child to follow instructions with fewer repeats and retell what they read.
Expressive language
ExpressingExpressing
I help your child develop expression: how they share what they know, aloud and on paper. Many children understand far more than they can show.
Signs your child may need support
- gives very short answers or struggles to find words
- can't put events or ideas in order
- avoids writing, or writes much less than they can say
What I work on
- vocabulary
- building sentences
- sequencing and storytelling
- organising written answers
In my sessions
I use story-sequencing cards, “describe and guess” games, and word cards to build sentences
What I aim for
I aim for your child to share ideas in clear, ordered sentences, aloud and in writing.
Computational skills
Number senseNumber sense
I help your child build number sense: understanding what numbers mean and how they work, not just remembering steps. Without this foundation, every new maths topic can feel like starting again.
Signs your child may need support
- gets confused between numbers that look alike, such as 6 and 9
- counts carefully but still gets the answer wrong
- mixes up place value, such as tens and ones
- freezes on word problems, or gets anxious about maths
What I work on
- number concepts and place value
- mental maths strategies
- the four operations, with understanding
- word problems
In my sessions
I use counters, blocks, money games, measuring and everyday maths around the home
What I aim for
I aim for your child to understand why a method works and choose strategies with more confidence.
Critical thinking and problem solving
Thinking and problem solvingThinking and problem solving
I help children strengthen the thinking skills they need to focus, start a task, plan the steps and keep going when it gets hard. These skills matter in every subject, and outside school too.
Signs your child may need support
- finds it hard to start homework without help
- gives up quickly or gets frustrated easily
- struggles to plan, organise or check their work
What I work on
- focus
- starting and planning tasks
- flexible thinking
- handling frustration
In my sessions
I use puzzles and strategy games, visual planners, and “what else could we try?” challenges
What I aim for
I aim for your child to start tasks with less prompting, plan their steps and keep trying for longer.
Who I work with
I work with children aged 6 to 14, including children with:
- ADHD
- specific learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia
- learning difficulties without a diagnosis
- no learning difficulty, who want to strengthen their skills and confidence
You don't need a diagnosis to start. If a clinical evaluation would help, I'll tell you and suggest who to see.
Inside a session
My sessions are live, 1-on-1 and online, and last 45 to 60 minutes. You and I agree on how often your child has sessions, based on their plan. I use games, stories and hands-on activities, and I share tips to keep the learning going at home.
Which skill does your child need most?
Tell me what you've noticed. I'll help you work out where to start.
